Vasileostrovskaya CHPP-7 is a 135 MW gas and oil-fired power plant located in St. Petersburg, Russia. Operated by PJSC "TGC-1", this facility was commissioned in 1932 and utilizes both natural gas and oil for electricity generation. This plant is also ranked as the 170th largest gas facility in Russia. With a capacity of 135 MW, it represents 0.1% of the total gas capacity of 139,541 MW in the country. Russia has 299 gas plants with a combined capacity of 139,541 MW. Compared to the largest gas plant, Surgutskaya GRES-2 at 8,865 MW, it is approximately 1/66th the size. In Russia, gas remains a dominant fuel for power generation, contributing significantly to the national energy mix. The Vasileostrovskaya CHPP-7 is positioned in the northwestern region of Russia, roughly 10 km from the center of St. Petersburg.

Gas power generation is a significant component of the global energy landscape, characterized by the use of natural gas to produce electricity. This process typically involves either gas turbines or combined cycle gas plants. In a gas turbine, compressed air is mixed with natural gas and ignited, producing high-temperature exhaust gases that spin a turbine connected to a generator. Combined cycle plants enhance efficiency by utilizing both gas and steam turbines. After the gas turbine generates electricity, the waste heat is used to produce steam, which drives a steam turbine, thereby maximizing energy extraction from the fuel.
