Global II148.8 MW Oil

Oil

Global II is a 148.8 MW oil-fired power plant located in Bahia, Brazil. It was commissioned in 2010 and contributes to the local energy supply. Global II ranks as the 18th largest oil plant in Brazil. With 148.8 MW, it represents 1.81% of the country's total oil capacity of 8,220 MW. Brazil has 622 oil plants with a combined capacity of 8,220 MW. Compared to the largest oil plant in Brazil, Mauá at 553 MW, this facility is approximately 0.27 times its size. Oil remains a minor but significant part of Brazil's energy mix, accounting for about 3% of the country's electricity generation. The Global II plant uses oil to provide energy, particularly during peak demand periods. It is located approximately 50 km from Salvador in the northeastern region of the country.

An Overview of Oil as a Power Generation Energy Source

Oil power generation involves the combustion of oil to produce electricity. The process typically begins with the extraction and refining of crude oil, which is then burned in a power plant to create steam. This steam drives turbines connected to generators, converting thermal energy into electrical energy. Oil power plants can vary in design, including steam turbine plants, gas turbine plants, and combined cycle plants, which utilize both gas and steam turbines to enhance efficiency. As of now, there are 2,416 oil power plants worldwide, distributed across 108 countries, with a total installed capacity of 286.9 gigawatts (GW).
