This dominance is primarily due to major river systems such as the Nile, Congo, and Zambezi, which provide substantial potential for hydroelectric projects. Solar energy has also gained traction, with 181 solar plants contributing 6.6 GW to the grid. The continent's abundant sunlight makes solar power an appealing option, particularly in arid regions. Conversely, fossil fuels remain prevalent, with natural gas powering 141 plants (67.4 GW) and oil contributing 9.5 GW from 107 plants. Notably, there are 166 plants with unknown fuel sources, which highlights challenges in data transparency and reporting in the energy sector.

Key countries leading the way in power generation include Ethiopia, which has made significant investments in hydroelectric projects, making it one of the largest producers of renewable energy in Africa. Egypt, with its ambitious solar initiatives, is also becoming a leader in harnessing solar power. Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, relies heavily on gas for its energy needs, while South Africa, despite its coal-dominated power generation, is progressively integrating renewable energy into its grid.
